The role of sponsors
Sponsors are usually parents or godparents. Anyone can be a sponsor or godparent of the person being baptised. They are asked to encourage the person in the life and faith of the Christian community by friendship and love. They profess their willingness to accept responsibility for helping with the spiritual growth of the person being baptised.
Parents and godparents make promises on behalf of a child being baptised until they are old enough to make them for themselves at Confirmation.
