Art in St Peter's Cathedral

Art is an integral part of Cathedral life.

Bill Viola: Three Women

St Peter’s Cathedral will once again welcome the wider community into our sacred space, when we host a video installation during the 2015 Adelaide Festival. Bill Viola, a contemporary video artist, is considered a leading figure in a generation of artists using image electronic and sound technology. His works focus on the ideas behind fundamental human experiences such as birth, death and aspects of consciousness.

Three Women is part of Viola’s “Transfigurations” series, reflecting on the passage of time and the transformation of inner being, as a mother and her two daughters move into, through and beyond life.

Viola's work uses ultra-slow motion video, thus encouraging the viewer to sink into the image with
time to think, wonder and, perhaps, pray. The Lady Chapel will be a discreet gallery during the
Festival. Services normally held in the Lady Chapel will be held elsewhere in the Cathedral.
